I think the shoulder pain is from Press, not high elbows on squat....

Hello Dr Feigenbaum and Dr. Baraki,

Upon dwelling on my past 2 weeks of training, I found a pattern. Only the Press workouts were ones that I felt my shoulder pain afterwards. Never the bench workouts. Additionally, the pain is felt afterwards in a ROM that suggests Press. The pain seems to dissipate completely by the time the next press workout arrives. I am not able to see anything obviously form related, but if it were my best logical guess it could possibly be not shrugging enough at the top. However, I look at other people’s press sets and their shrugs seem about the same as mine. My grip width is the width suggested by Coach Ball, and I never feel any pain or even vague discomfort during a set of Press at all, which seems strange. What steps do you think I could take to address this issue? Thanks much!

It does seem strange if you feel nothing at all during the actual presses.

I don’t have any specific advice for you – if I was in this situation, I’d continue experimenting with some variables (like, say, pressing frequency/volume, pressing variants, and squat style) to see if anything caused an improvement. Then, from there, plan a gradual progression back to the “main” movements you are trying to use.

The other thing to consider- if the pain isn’t that bad maybe you don’t do anything about it at all…
