I’m 17 and have been lifting for around 22 months. 5 weeks ago I started experiencing shoulder pain after a heavy bench press session.
When I was warming up I felt a sudden weakness in my right shoulder (no pain). I went on with the bench session (stupid I know) and the weakness got much worse as the weights got heavier. I felt no pain during the training. When I woke up the next day my shoulder hurt a lot. I couldn’t lift my arm without pain.
A week later the pain was almost gone, and I tried benching again but I woke up with the same pain again the next day.
Next week I was overhead pressing as this didn’t produce any pain. But after I was done with my top set I racked the bar on my shoulders (like a front squat), and I immediately felt a lot of pain in my shoulder and again I couldn’t move my arm. I couldn’t even lie down on my back without shoulder pain. Luckily in the afternoon the next day the pain started to subside and I could move my arm somewhat painfree.
I decided to rest my shoulder completely and take a whole week off from the gym. But unfortunately I slept in a bad position and I hurt my shoulder again. It was the same pain as before and it subsided somewhat the next day.
This week I have pretty much no shoulder pain in my daily life, I can move it freely without pain. The problem is when I tighten my lats as if doing bent rows, deadlifts, chin ups or bench pressing the front my shoulder hurts especially if I raise my arm out in front of me (like the lockout position of a bench press). I can overhead press an empty barbell pain free but if I add even light weight this also hurts. I can still do low bar squats painfree somehow, but pretty much every other movement hurts, even curls hurt.
Hey Mads, sorry to hear about the shoulder symptoms. i recommend checking out the first two links Acland posted. Also, check out our shoulder podcast HERE.
I checked out the links and I didn’t really find an answer.
Everything hurts my shoulder, the only things that doesn’t hurt are back squats and cable rows.
The pain is right where the pec attaches to the shoulder.
I’ve tried resting my shoulder and completely avoid any movement that hurts for two weeks now, and I’m not really seeing an improvement.
I can move my shoulder around completely pain free now, but whenever I tighten my lats it hurts. I’ve tried overhead pressing and I’ve found that it hurts less if a relax my lats and let my elbows flare out.
I tried benching an empty barbell and it was only at lockout I had pain.
I also tried some incline pressing with some light dumbbells it felt fine the first couple of reps, but then (idk how to explain this) it almost felt like my shoulder joint popped out and it hurt really bad (this also happens randomly throughout the day when moving my shoulder). I moved my arm around a couple of time (very painful) and it sorta felt like the joint “popped” into place again, and the pain disappeared.
I’ve scoured the web and I can’t really find an answer to my problem. I hope someone on here can help me. I’ll probably go to a doctor soon to see if they can help me.
