I want to train like a bodybuilder year round, what do?

Hey BBM Crew,

When I initially started training, I had a very strong interest in barbell-focused strength training. However, recently after running a modified version of your guys’ Bodybuilding Template (primarily using machines and dumbbells), I realized how I actually enjoy bodybuilding-style training way more. I really enjoy the process of building a muscular physique. I’m still very early on in this process and have a long ways to go to reach my goals, but moving forward this is definitely the style of training that I want to focus on long term and possibly for the majority of my training career.

If I want to train like a bodybuilder year round, what would I do in terms of programming? Let’s say I finish the Bodybuilding Template with great success and decide to run it again. What would I do after that, as in, what would my programming look like long term?

Do you guys have any evidence-based resources (beyond Bodybuilding I) that you would recommend for people who want to train like bodybuilders year round? Any individuals, Youtube channels, podcasts etc. that you’d recommend I check out/follow?

And just for some extra clarification, I primarily want to use machines and dumbbells in my training with a barbell exercise sprinkled in here and there. And when I say “train like a bodybuilder year round” I just mean that I want to do hypertrophy-focused training year round with the goal of getting as jacked and lean as possible.

Thanks in advance! And thanks for all the awesome content you guys put out!

BigMac,

Glad you have had a good experience with the BB template. As you’ve (hopefully) experienced, bodybuilding training and general strength and conditioning aren’t too different. We pick a combination of compound and isolation movements that are preferred by the individual and periodize the programming based on evidence, always adjusted based on feedback.

Our BB and Hypertrophy templates are the most “bodybuilding-focused” templates and resources. The accompanying text to the BB template discusses the programming element as well. I do not have any unique social media recommendations that I think would help your journey outside of the guests we’ve had on our podcast.

I don’t think it’s possible to be fully developed as a bodybuilder using only machines and dumbbells either.

Thanks for the reply Jordan!

That’s kind of what I was thinking based off what I’ve read from you guys, but I wasn’t totally sure if there was something I was missing in terms of bodybuilding programming. So this is good confirmation!

Thank you!
