L5/s1 bulge

Hello guys.

I have had chronic back pain for over a gear now. Pt says I’m flexion intolerant and a mri shows a bulge at l5/s1. My back fully went around 8 weeks ago picking up a dumbell if a box. This has me in severe pain for close to 2 weeks. Now the pain is around 2-4/10 with some mild nerve pain in glutes and sometimes in the front hip crease region still have not got the full rom back flexion wise. However i would like to start deadlifting…bear in mind i did not deadlift kuch previous to injury…however i did feintandf high bar squat. Im unsure as to tbe progressions for squats and deadlifts so i can lift pain free. Previous i would sauay relativlre pain free… but it would flare up once ive cooled down which i think i am afraid of. Any help would be grateful. Thanks

Hey, sorry to hear about the low back pain.

You’d likely benefit from a consult with us so we can help guide the path into activity and meeting your desired goals (Contact Us | Barbell Medicine).

Overall, disc related issues can resolve over time and it’s imperative we don’t completely avoid movements (most especially those we may be afraid of). If you are indeed having difficulty with spinal flexion then a good starting point is just attempting to go into the position and slowly progressing the amount of flexion you can achieve over time. Regarding deadlifting, once you are able to get into the position with tolerable levels of symptoms, then you can start pulling off the ground while slowly progressing intensity over time. Same approach with squatting, can you achieve the position of a squat (example sit to stand then body-weight squat), then slowly adding load via a goblet squat or barbell. Happy to help.
