Either I’m missing something obvious, or my arithmetic sucks, or…
I’m noticing that a nontrivial number of nutritional labels on food packaging doesn’t add up. For one example, a Quest Double Chocolate Crunch protein bar is listed on the package as 180 calories. But with 7g of fat, 24g of carbs, and 20g of protein also on the label, those macros should add up to 239 calories (9xF,4xC and 4xP)…a discrepancy of 59 calories.
What gives? Am I supposed to net out fiber for some amount of calories/g?
How much fibre is listed? Some countries/locations list total carbs (including fibre) and some only net carbs (total carbs minus fibre). In this example, there could be 24g of total carbs, 15g of fibre, meaning only 9g net carbs, yielding the 180cals. However, I kinda highly doubt there’s 15g of fibre in a quest bar, so I dunno. You could always try emailing the company.
Ah, cool! There you go, the 24g of carbs is likely including the 14g of fibre, and they’re not counting the fibre towards calories. Confusingly, some labels don’t include fibre in the carbs.
