I recently tore my labrum and am having surgery to repair the issue. What can I expect as far as getting back to deadlifting and benching? I know pressing will probably take longer, but how long should I wait to attempt deadlifting again.
For some background- I am a 28 yo former college athlete that lifts every day. Mostly weights, but I recently started adding Metcon type lifts into my training.
Any information will be greatly appreciated.
Thank you.
This is going to be the normal “it depends” answer contingent upon what procedure they are doing. Typically after a labral repair you are in a sling for 6 weeks to protect the repair with initial emphasis being on range of motion and isometrics. It is more of a healing stage than any specific gains for your shoulder. After the sling is off at 6 weeks there still tends to be a little deficit in flexion and external rotation so I would not be keen on letting an athlete return to back squatting until that is normal. This does not mean you can’t SSB squat though and your surgeon may even okay this a little earlier. In regards to deadlifting this is likely more contingent on what you consider “getting back.” I would be comfortable letting someone start pulling again at 6 weeks if they could regulate enough not do do anything stupid.
As far as bench, a lot of this depends on what your motion looks like. If you have normal ROM I would probably let you start back around 10 weeks.
There are still a host of other exercises you can do while going through the initial phases that are within the typical precautions of surgery. It is just making sure to develop a plan with which to do those, until you can get back to the big three.
