Hey BBM,
This is a follow-up post to a previous post I made: https://forum.barbellmedicine.com/forums/training-q-a-with-dr-jordan-feigenbaum-and-dr-austin-baraki/89856-long-term-shoulder-injury-what-next
To give a short update - I decided to go through with the shoulder arthroscopy surgery through the healthcare system in my country. I’ve already met with the surgeon, who’s considered very good by many, and went over the risks and benifits and so on.
There are a couple of questions that I wanted to ask him but forgot (I’ll make sure to ask him on the day of the surgery), and wanted to get some insight from the BBM team about this (mainly questions about what to expect and how to prepare):
- This is more of a general question, but is there anything I should be preparing ahead of time ahead of the surgery, such as a sling from my arm, button-down shirts since they’ll be easier to put on, and stuff of this nature?
- I was told that full recovery will be around 3-5 months, depending on what exactly will be done in the surgery. What would be the time frame in order to get back to squatting / deadlifting, which I assume would be shorter than the full recovery time, and how soon can I get back to weight training with exercises that don’t involve my arms, such as leg extensions, calves raises, leg presses and co? Also, would you expect 3-5 months to be the moment I can begin light weight training (such as bench press with just the bar), or is this the time-frame to full recovery where I can train “as normal”?
Thanks in advance!
