Lower Body Workload on Strength I

Hi everyone. So I’m in week 4 now of the Strength I program and my bench is progressing extremely well, but my deadlift and squat are a bit iffy. I’m able to complete the required work but I feel quite beat up all the time. (sore back and legs and slight pain now and then in my knees)

I know from personal experience that I tend to overtrain rather then undertrain, and so I want to ask if you would reccomend reducing the workload or to just keep going at it until something breaks.

If you would reduce the workload, what exactly would you reduce? Less backof sets, no overload squat day, or something else?

One thing to try could involve decreasing the RPE targets by 1 point and seeing how you tolerate that.

If you are still experiencing issues, your subsequent options could involve changing the exercise selection (if there are movements that you feel are disproportionately fatiguing) or decreasing the number of sets.

Thanks for the advice. I just spent the past half hour reading through your article on pain during training and wanted to ask how you would handle to following situation.

I skipped the overload squat workout on Wednesday because I was feeling overworked, especially in my back and knees. I don’t know if this was a smart thing to do, but in any case I got back to training again today. After the heavy deadlift single my right knee started to hurt somewhat. After the top set of 5 and subsequent backdown set the pain only got worse and so I decided to cut the session off and go home before doing any real damage to my knee. Currently (a few hours after the session) my knee still hurts somewhat.

I would also like to ask if you recommend any stretches to prevent pain like this reoccurring in the future and if you have ever experienced knee sleeves actually causing knee pain, as I have recently begun using them (since about 6 weeks or so) and this is my first time experiencing knee pain in my training career.
