Overload and Back Work

Hello,

I recently bought the Powerlifting II program and will start running it in about two weeks time. I have some questions regarding the overload work and the dose of back work.

In the developmental phase there is lots of overload work, sadly, my gym is not equipped with bands or chains. I’m thinking of buying a band to perform deadlifts with, but do not have any alternatives for the squat and press overload work. What are some alternatives to the overload work, and how detrimental to my progress is not having access to overload equipment? Would I be better off doing banded deadlifts, or rack pulls?

Secondly, the amount of direct back work seems pretty low. I know this is a powerlifting specific program, but how detrimental would adding more sets of back work be? In my last program I directly trained back 4x a week, 5 sets each time always around an RPE 7. I know 25 sets of back work seems like a lot, but I made great progress and never had any aches or pains. I made sure I did not perform too much back work that would interfere with my deadlift training. I did barbell rows once a week and the rets of the time I did chin ups, pull ups or cable work. Can I continue doing this on Powerlifting II?

Thanks again for all your help. I am excited about the next 13 weeks!

Attila,

Thanks for the post and I hope you’re well. For overload work I would do:

Squat- just do squat w/ no belt
Bench- do floor press or board/towel press
Deadlift- do mid shin rack pull
Press- do press or incline bench

I would not add any direct back work and I don’t think I would add any in addition to the GPP work on the program for your first time through

Thanks for the reply Doc!

What are the reasons why you program overload work during a developmental block instead of just using straight weight?

I’d like you to try and handle some heavier weight to drive the desired strength adaptations
