Lumbar Fusion and Squats/Deads

I’m wondering what your thoughts are on squatting and deadlifting following lumbar fusion (L5/S1). I had one done 10 years ago and was told by several MD/PT’s etc… that I should not be doing those types of lifts any longer. I started doing them about a year ago because I figured…I still have intermittent pain anyways, why not? To be honest, I did not have much, if any, increased low back pain with slow but steady build up. Once I got my deadlift to ~ 185lbs, I would wake up very stiff and mildly sore throughout the lower lumbar spine the next day but I can typically stretch it out within a day or two. I have just started the SSLP program yesterday and was wondering what your thoughts are on the these lifts long term. I am 35 now and typically lift to stay competitive in sports but love the idea of getting back into heavier lifting. Any help is appreciated.

We have trained many people in this situation who have ultimately done just fine. I would seek out some in-person coaching to make sure your technique looks good.

Excellent. That is good to hear. I will hopefully be attending one of your seminars next spring. In the meantime, I will try to find someone local here for some coaching. Thanks.
