Medication detrimental to joint health

I’ve had trouble with this friend of mine. I’ve posted on here before about his chrons disorder and he continued to lift but now he hurt his knee. Yesterday he stood up at work and felt a sharp pain in his knee so he went to the doctor today. The doctor diagnosed him with an “inflamed bursa”. He was also told the medication (prednisone and rimicade) he is on over long term will be detrimental too his ligaments and joints. The doctor also told him to take time off and test the range of motion slowly in a couple days. My questions are: is the doctors statement about the medication true, can he continue to train with this inflamed bursa and how should I go about helping him through this? Thank you for your time and help I appreciate it!

Prednisone is generally not great for the musculoskeletal system for many reasons, but it is often necessary to help control certain autoimmune conditions or acute flare-ups.

Remicade can cause some sore joints in a minority of patients, but I’m not aware of any true “harms” to the musculoskeletal system.

Bursitis is not a reason to avoid training, and I would use our typical approach to injury in such a situation.

Thank you!
