My coworker said he's lifting to gain muscle while on a week long fast.

https://idmprogram.com/fasting-and-m…sting-part-14/ ← He points to this article as to why he thinks he’s able to build muscle with literally no calories coming in since last Wednesday? What does one say…?

“Cool. Good luck with that, man.” would be my response to him, while I enjoy a hearty steak and potatoes meal.

Good luck with that
lol

LOL, basically what I said…I think I actually said “zero chance of that happening, but you’re welcome to believe what you want!” But, can someone who’s medically educated enough in this area respond to the article he presented?

Is he open to discussing it? If not, let him do his dumb thing.

If he’s completely untrained, he’ll gain some muscle, though not as much as he could if he ate.

Its a single week, so any results gleened from training even in a caloric surplus will be impossible to notice anyway.

I can tell you just from cutting back on calories the last few days and deciding after todays workout to go back up to where I was that it isn’t going to work. He is not going to recover worth a darn.

FWIW I was at 2700 cal w/ 200 grams protein and recovering fine while beginning SS (on my third week). Cut back to 2200 cal w/ 200 grams protein and felt terrible today. I think I switched to the lower calories on Fri of last week. I definitely need the extra 500 cal and possibly even more but I want to lose a little belly circumference before going up any more in weight. Ideally I’d like to stay the same weight for a bit.

FINALY, the truth is revealed.

I’ve always suspected the authors of every single article I’ve ever read in my life regarding caloric surplus as it relates to acquisition of muscle tissue were on the payroll of multinational food corporations and the whole thing is a ruse designed to keep us eating more. Even that miserable old virgin Isaac Newton with his bogus 1st law of thermodynamics seems to be in of it.

Bless him…

I’ve decided that talking about training or nutrition with those who don’t “get it” is a waste of time. My co-workers are all on keto or gluten free. I just do my thing and ignore everyone else.

So, how did it go for the OP’s colleague?

I wasn’t hating on keto specifically if you know what it’s good for (appetite suppression), but my coworkers are all doing it because it’s the latest fad. I couldn’t talk them out of it if I tried, cause there’s so much BS on the 'grams and the tubes. But glad they are at least focusing on diet for outcome. If they asked me I’d point them to barbell training, 1gm protein / lb body weight, and have them mainline Jordan F. vidyas on the tubes.

My fiance’s dad is on the keto bandwagon right now. It’s working for him, he’s losing a pretty good amount of weight, maybe 60-70lbs so far and probably has that far left to go to get to where he should be. But he is getting to be a bit of an evangelist about it. It’s almost the only thing he will talk about and he’s to the point to where he hates on any carbs at all. He’s sure they are the root of all evil.
