Over the past few months, I have been dealing with some nerve pain in my heal whenever I do RDLs or any type of hamstring stretch. I used to “throw out my back” every few months but it hasn’t happened in over a year. My back pain is almost nonexistent at the moment besides from tightness of my left spinal erector. The nerve pain sometimes carries over to deadlifts too. I suppose I was just wondering if this flexion induced nerve pain or sciatica is something I should stop deadlifting/ RDL because of, or is it beneficial to expose myself to that range of motion.
Hey Kirl - tough for us to say what may be ongoing based on the information provided. We’d ultimately need a consultation with you. However, even if we are in radicular/radiculopathy based situation, I usually have folks perform movements to meet their activity goals to tolerance, within reason. If we are not seeing improvement in symptoms specific to that movement or symptoms continue to worsen during/after the movement then it’s reasonable to take the movement out for a bit and do something less symptomatic to meet the same activity goal(s). Hope that helps. If you are interested in a consultation with us, we’d be happy to speak with you further. Please complete our intake paperwork HERE.
