Night Shifts and Sleep Quality

Hello Docs, I would appreciate your insight on the following.

I am going to try to keep this brief … if one were to get 8 hours of uninterrupted sleep, does it really matter that much if those hours of sleep were during the day as opposed to during the night? (for example, sleeping from 9 a.m. - 5 p.m.) I’m currently finishing up some self-study law exams to become a qualified lawyer in Canada (just moved over from the UK). I study during the day and work nightshifts from Monday-Friday. I keep the same sleep schedule during the weekends. Aside from studying and working 5 days a week, I do not have any other major obligations, thus, leaving me plenty of time to train. Having just moved over, I took the first part-time job that was available and it pays fairly well. My day typically goes something like this.

  • Wake up at 5 p.m.

  • Study until around 10 p.m.

  • Go to the gym and train from 11 p.m - 1 a.m.

  • Work 2 a.m - 7 a.m.

  • Sleep 9 a.m. - 5 p.m.

I think you’ll be fine.
