One Arm Push-up a good bilateral exercise?

Is One Arm Push-up a good bilateral exercise?

Or is it more of a party trick?

By definition, a 1-arm push-up is unilateral, not bilateral. If you’re asking whether or not it transfers to bilateral upper body tasks like the bench press, the answer is yes.

That all being said, I think it’s a generally poor movement to choose for training upper body strength unless someone wants to get good at a 1-arm push-up.

I’m noticing a lot of exercise selection questions from you recently and curiosity is getting the best of me. What’s going on?

Sorry meant unilaterally.

Previously I have almost only trained squats, bench and deadlifts, so I’m trying to learn what is right and wrong. Unfortunately there is a lot of confusion on the internet, but Barbell Medicine is a really good and trustworthy site!

Isn’t training unilateral horizontal press a good thing for general health?

I think it would be very, very challenging to make the case that any specific exercise is good for general health. Yes, people should resistance train. Yes, they should train all major muscle groups of the body using challenging loads over a large ROM. Yes, the training should be programmed in a way where people enjoy it and are getting stronger. After that, I don’t think there’s much I feel confident about programming-wise that impacts health uniquely.
