I just bought the strength I template and will be starting Monday. I’ve never used not do I have chains or bands.
Monday calls for overload pulls, do I was planning on buying chains.
1- where do I get them? Just regular chains from home Depot?
2- how long, and how heavy?
3- how do you secure then to the bar?
Thanks for the post. For chains, I like either 1/2" or 5/8" chain cut in 4’ lengths. You can get these from a bunch of different places, though marine retailers or similar may be the best. A 4’ segment of 1/2" chain is about 18lbs and 5/8" is ~25lbs. 1stchainsupply.com is a good resource.
For securing them to the bar, you can get a bit of smaller “carrier” chain, which is typically 3/16" and can range from 4-6 feet in length. You can also use something like the chain mate from spud (https://www.spud-inc-straps.com/product/chain-mate/) or loop the carrier chain over the bar. That’s what I use personally when using chains.
I second the recommendation for 1st Chain Supply as the most economical and convenient choice for quality lifting chains. Two things to note. A single 5-feet length of 5/8-inch chain as sold by 1st Chain Supply is 18 pounds. This is stated by the supplier, and I verified the weights upon receipt. So, a kit, consisting of two carrier chains and two 5-feet lengths, will weigh 40 pounds. Also, although it is not listed, they do sell individual chain lengths without the carrier chains, if you don’t want the full kit. The part number for the individual 5-feet length is 38-313CL5A. I chose 5 feet over 4 feet for the deadlift: when draping the chains over the bar, the chain ends leave the floor by just a couple inches (for me). That way, the whole movement becomes a gradual overload.
