Overshooting RPE in top sets (PB1)

  1. Running PB1 again. Press week 4.

The prescription is 6@6; 6@72; 6@83
6@7went fine with 45 kg, then next step 47.5 kg had me at RPE8.5 instead of @8
trying again at same weight hade me a 4@9 forcing me to lower the weight to 45 for my last set of 6

Since this is a common feature in the programs (been running HT1 and GS&C) how do you handle overshooting the top set and following sets?

Adjust the weight down for the remaining sets or just call it a day?

At 50 and shoehorned back to help out in a karate club for a couple of days a week, my recovery is a limiting factor (and trying to maintain a small deficit to get rid of 15 kg of lard)

Thx for the excellent programs and podcast (General S&C got me back to training a couple of years ago and was my introduction to the main lifts!)

patiently waiting for the android version

Christer,

Thanks for the kind words and glad to see you training.

For your situation, yes, I would adjust the weight down and make sure you’re taking ~ 3 minutes between sets. That’s the first thing that comes to mind when a 6 @ 8.5 becomes a 4 @ 9. Could also be a technique issue that popped up out of randomly for that to happen. In either case, I’d still adjust the weight down.

Much appreciated.
Been on my mind for awhile.
Will adjust RPE mindset, probably smarter to undershoot than overshoot in my current status.
