Paused and tempo variations?

Dear Dr. Feigenbaum and Dr. Baraki,

I think I may be über-strict about the secondary and tertiary variations of the main movements, but should or shouldn’t I use a metronome for my paused and tempo movements? Do you or the BBM team ever use a metronome app?

I have been using the metronome for some time to ensure I don’t count super fast, but sometimes the metronome seems really darned slow and it makes me want to quit powerlifting all together when I have to do 303 tempos or 8 rep 2ct paused squats. I also may be overshooting on all these non-competition movements. Please help me!

Sincerely Yours,

Eddie Mun

I don’t really think it matters too much. Ideally your timing is generally consistent from rep to rep and session to session, but absolute perfection is not required. There is nothing magic about doing a 3-count eccentric versus a 2.75-count eccentric, for example - the point is the exercise specificity and loading.

Overshooting regularly is a bigger problem than a bit of variation on your counts, imo.

Thanks Dr. Baraki!

Any tips on preventing overshooting?
