Picky Eaters Anonymous

Hi! Any other picky eaters around?

I’ve been a picky eater my whole life (27 now), although I’ve improved a bit over the last 3 years. My diet is basically just rice, bread, chicken, cheese, pizza, and peanut butter. I know a lot of people just say “grow up”, or “it’s part of being an adult, just eat it”, but it’s been a bit more of a real psychological struggle for me (feels like the equivalent of telling an overweight person to just “eat less”). New flavours or textures create a very strong involuntary disgust reflex for me.

Wondering if anyone else struggles with this (or knows a picky eater!) and has any anecdotal tips or tricks to help them overcome new food challenges, or just has any stories to tell!

Cheers~

I was a picky eater until I was nearly 30. Sushi changed my life. I eat all kinds of weird stuff now. Start by taking the foods you like and eat a slightly different variation of it.

‘Pizza’ casts a pretty wide net. If you couldn’t include all the major food groups either in the crust or topping I miss my guess.

I used to never eat onion just didn’t like it. Not the taste or the crunch. Until I realized the little green and white things floating in wanton soup were green onion. So when I went to the store next a grabbed a bundle of green onions and used them in that nights dinner (black beans and grilled chicken breast with Mexican salsa verde). The green onions gave it a mellow onion flavor. After a while I tried caramelizing a yellow onion with the beef gravy I was making for cottage pie and that turned out great. Now I put onions in nearly everything. Raw onions still put me off a bit but they wont have me trying to pick it off anymore.

If you want to condition yourself to eating something try finding something that’s like it but milder and use them in something.
