Poor Technique limiting my progress:

I have been training for just over two years, beginning with SSOC, the did a few months on my own. Worked with BBM for several months last fall, now on my own again. I have never been able to fix my squat and bench press technique to the point of making steady gains, despite good on-line coaching. I may be “unfixable”. So here I am just a few weeks from completing one of Andy Baker’s HLM programs. After completion I am definitely planning on doing something with BBM again. I am torn between running the Bridge 1.0 on my own, or giving on-line coaching another try with the ladies group. I know I need in-person coaching, even just a one time session. Tried that once and the coach just half-hearted tried to help me. Took $100.00 for basically nothing. So what would you gentlemen suggest? My 1RM are: deadlift 260; bench 87; squat 185, OHP 60. THe Dl & Squat were gained early last summer. Last heavy squat was 173 one week ago. I am soon to be 61 years old, female. I love lifting. Close to retirement so I am trying to manage my money, so No one-on-one coaching at this time is possible. Any suggestions welcomed.

Hi Kim,

Can you post a video of your squat?

Jordan, post it here or on the BBM FB Page?

Jordan, below are links to a 125 lb squat (light day yesterday–red sweat jacket) and 173 lb single from one week ago.

Kim,

These aren’t bad at all. That said, I’d like to see you to the following:

  1. Eliminate the head tilt down + elbows up movement that occurs when you’re taking your breath/initiating your descent. Just take your breath and hold tight.
  2. When initiating the down- don’t think about bending over as much as you’re thinking about pushing your knees forward and out.
  3. On the way up, think about pushing your hips forward vs. driving your hips up- because they’re going backwards
  4. I’d try to speed these up. Descend faster, bounce, and drive up.

Like I said, these aren’t bad at all.
