Rate of weight gain or loss

I’ve read that in general a good rate of weight gain or loss is a pound or two a week. Gain or loss phases should each be about three months, with a month of maintenance in between.

What do you think of these as general guidelines? Are there general guidelines you’d prefer?

I think these general guidelines need context to be useful. Still, they are not terribly well established that they work better than other strategies and so I’m not sure that they are very useful.

The general context would be a desire to gain muscle and lose fat over time, while training, for someone who is neither extremely overweight nor underweight.

Please suggest something a bit more nuanced.

I think that a nuanced response is less generalized and not terribly helpful for general recommendations. The OP isn’t bad, I just don’t find it useful.

In today’s video, you recommend that if Alan wanted to lose 20 pounds (240 to 220), he cut 500 calories per day. Based on the old formula that 3,500 calories is a pound of bodyweight, that’s about a pound a week. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fWpzxsVntuA.

Yep, though it rarely works out that way.
