reaction to protein shake

Hi BBM

Sometimes after a whey protein shake, I get a headache which last 20-30 mins. Sometimes I get a headache and nausea, again lasting about 30 minutes. Then all symptoms resolve. This seems to be a new problem recently. This never used to happen.

Do you guys know what in particular might be causing this, and what I should do about it?

Thanks

New headaches probably deserve a characterization and appropriate work up, when necessary. The relationship to diet would then need to be further established, but anything is possible.

What kind of whey are you consuming?

It’s a from a UK company called “Bulk”, It’s their ‘Informed Whey’ series. The label states that in a 30g scoop there is 24g of protein 65% of which is from whey protein isolate and 35% whey protein concentrate.

I would say the headaches are fairly minor, but enough to want to lay down. Not lasting for longer than 30 minutes.

For the headache workup, I meant you’d probably need to see a physician if they’re bothering you.

The supplement is kind of strange in that it’s protein content would be fine, but then they muck it up with the glutamine (artificially inflates protein #), a probiotic that probably doesn’t do anything, and digestive enzymes that you don’t need either.

I’d probably seek out a whey protein isolate that’s just whey and see how you do.

I’ll try another whey protein and see what happens.

Thanks Jordan!

Hi, I sometimes get a headache and a little nausea after having a whey protein shake then it goes away after an hour and it returns after i’ve had another shake. This “Optimum Nutrition Gold Standard® 100 percent Whey Protein” is what I use.
