Right Shoulder Pain?

I just got back into training and I have a past hx of a right shoulder subluxation. A chiropractor set my humerus back into the joint. Upon squatting I’ve had a lack of flexibility in both my shoulders, R > L. Stretching with my hands in the correct squatting position has helped both shoulders with flexibility, but im having some pain in my right shoulder. Pain presents during squatting and relaxed internal and external rotation, when right arm is performing a front raise and when i try and scratch the middle of my back w my right hand. The pain is anterior, superior and posterior. There is also a clicking and or popping sound like a tendon or ligament is getting caught and released or rubbing on a bony formation.

thoughts on what it could be and what i can do to alleviate the pain or am i stuck w ith for the rest of my life?

Hey there. Have you gotten the change to check out any of our free content? I think that this article should answer all of the questions that you are asking. You certainly are not stuck with this for the rest of your life! Hannah

I did read thru almost all of the articles on your website and definitely read all of the articles that involved shoulder pain. I believe my shoulder was set incorrectly, like it’s back in place but not how it was originally, if that’s even possible? I have no pain when I am benching, pressing, rowing, deadlifting, etc. My pain is primarily when I set my hands up for a low bar squat. I found a YouTube video from SS where, like your article mentioned, to not run away from the pain. It was suggested for people who have less than optimal shoulder flexibility. As part of my warm up I take a wide grip on the 45lb bar, pinky unhooked from the bar and my ring finger against the squat rack and slowly bring the bar behind my head to about C4 and hold it, repeat. I progressively get lower and lower thru the stretching to make it to the low bar position for squats. Prior to this stretching I was limited to having my hands outside the squat rack and basically palming the plates.

Are there any other recommendations you can make for my situation.

TIA

It’s unlikely that your shoulder is not set correctly; however, this would require a consultation or a visit to a local provider. It’s quite common that after shoulder subluxation to have some feelings of instability and discomfort in your shoulder. It’s great news that you are able to press, row, and deadlift without symptoms; this should be very reassuring for you. It’s not uncommon to have symptoms with low bar squats following shoulder dislocation. Have you considered high bar or safety bar squats as a substitution? You can gradually add back in low bar squats to tolerance as your symptoms subside.
