Hey guys
So I’m wondering for a person like me that trains 3 times a week doing SSLP would it be detrimental other than for calorie related reasons to be sitting most of my day (8-9 hours)?
Hey guys

I’m not really sure what your question is.
If you’re asking whether being sedentary is detrimental compared to being more active, the answer is yes.
Let me answer that in a different way. I’m a watchmaker, my job requires me to sit for 9 hours a day, in crappy positions with focus. I support a large family and make a good living, so as much as I would like to do something active it isn’t currently an option.
I used to have a lot of aches, pains etc. Barbell training and getting stronger has made that about 97% better. I had tried all kinds of other shit before getting stronger, most of which didn’t really work.
So, would it be better not to do so, yes. Is barbell training a good way, and likely the best, to off set this if you have to do it. Yes. I hope that helps.
Thanks for the replies! I think I already replied but don’t see the post.
Ok so 24 y/o male 6’2 @ 230lbs Doing Starting Strength Linear Progression already (so yes lifting 3 times a week) but sitting on a chair for most of my day.
Is it detrimental for my strength and hypertophy gains to be this sedentary? And if so how much activity and what activity would you recommend OUTSIDE those 3 days?
What factors induce strength and hypertrophy and how would sitting 8 hours a day affect those?
A lot of us have desk type jobs, where we basically sit for 8-9 hours per day. (myself included) The SSLP calls for just sticking to the program of training 3x per week, and maximizing recover between training sessions by eating enough calories and protein, getting enough sleep, and attempting to limit other stress in life if you can.
From what I have read, the SSLP program explicitly recommends not adding extra exercises (cardio, supplemental lifts, etc), as they will use some of your body’s limited recovery resources. The thought is that the 4-6 months of novice strength gains should be maximized, because you are only a novice once. You then transition to an intermediate program with the goal of weekly gains, and can introduce those other activities at this time.
I believe the short answer to your question is no, being sedentary for 8-9 hours per day will not be detrimental to gains from the SSLP program.
Good luck!
