Seizure during a meet

Hey Doctors!

I am a medical student and I was recently at a powerlifting meet where one of the competitors developed a seizure after his 3rd attempt deadlift. The paramedics took a while to arrive so all I could do was lie him in the recovery position (i.e. left lateral), made sure he was not choking on anything, and wait for the seizure to stop. He stopped seizing after about 3 minutes, had no previous history of epilepsies, and was fine after

My questions are:

  1. What would you have done in this situation?
  2. Would you give buccal midazolam if you had it with you and what if you do not have access to any medications?
  3. Would you refer him to the hospital for further investigations/

Thanks!

Sounds like what you did was reasonable. I don’t know why anyone would be carrying around buccal midazolam, but if you had it, you could try it to abort a seizure … though I would probably not be doing that if I were a medical student in this situation with paramedics en route. And yes, he should be sent to the hospital.
