Return to Training after Hypertensive Crisis

Yesterday I had a sudden hypertensive crisis out of nowhere where my BP reached ~180/125. I ended up in the ER, but ultimately my ECG, blood work, and chest X-ray were all normal. It was scary and jarring and frustrating to not have an answer for what happened.

In any case, I’m planning on taking it easy today, but I’m wondering about general considerations and guidelines about getting back to training after this. (I’m running BB2 right now, but will be switching to S&C2 when it’s released.) Should I make any alterations to lifting intensity, conditioning programming, etc.? I’m (understandably) quite anxious about overdoing anything and causing further damage.

I think it’s unlikely that exercise will need to be heavily modified based on what you’ve given alone, but unfortunately I don’t have nearly enough information here to give much guidance. This is probably more in the realm of an individual consultation, but more pertinent information would include things like:

-the context, including what signs / symptoms led you to get your blood pressure checked in the first place
-your personal/family medical history
-medications/supplements/substance use
-which specific labs were checked
-treatment and follow up plans

You mention concern about “causing further damage”, but it doesn’t sound like any “damage” was identified in the first place, nor do we have reason to believe this was directly related to (or exacerbated by) exercise.
