Should I run starting strength?

I have run stronglifts 5x5 in the past. After an extended (1-2 years) pause in training, I recently got back into the gym, doing gpp, and eating right.

I am currently running Jonnie Candito’s linear program, (strength/control). I’m enjoying the program and I’m getting stronger on it. Current lifts are: Squat 215 3x6; Bench 140 3x6; Deadlift 235 2x6. 20 yo male 215lbs with no health problems other than I should lose 15 or 20 lbs.

The reason I am hesitant to switch to sslp is the frequency drop from 4 days to 3 days, and decreased volume. The reason I am considering switching is I feel I may be able to simply perform the main movements (without the pause variations) each day which would lead me to progress faster.

I’m comfortable performing the squat, bench, deadlift, and press, however I’ve never done a power clean. Is it something that can be self taught? I taught myself the main movements by following quality online sources like bbm, Alan thrall and others and I think I have pretty good form.

We would not recommend running SSLP for a variety of reasons, e.g. hyperspecificity, lack of autoregulation, and no conditioning.

I can understand the appeal of LP, though most people are only able to add weight as described in that progression for about 9 weeks. In the grand scheme of things, this doesn’t really matter and the program itself doesn’t set you up for long-term success as a lifter anyway.

If you’re looking to switch programs, we’d recommend this one and giving the article a read: The Beginner Prescription

Thanks for the reply Jordan! I’ll take a look at the article and program.
