Shoulder and tricep pain after deadlift

Hi Doctors,

A couple weeks ago I was doing a heavy single on deadlift at about an rpe of 8-9 and I felt a pop in to places around my shoulder. It hurt afterwards on the front of my delt, the long head of my tricep and my armpit where my lat attaches. My initial thought was that it was a muscle strain so I took a week off from lifting and have been doing my best to rehab. It feels mostly better so this week I have been doing my main lifts but at a reduced weight and volume. The only movement that really hurts is any kind of pull up movement or straight arm pull down with the pain mostly centered in the front delt and tricep. My question is does this sound like symptoms of a muscle strain or should I be worried about any kind of labral damage. I previously had to get labrum repair on the other shoulder so I just want to make sure. Any advice on rehab movements would also be much appreciated. Thanks.

Connorforeal - thanks for the questions and sorry to hear about your situation. I do recommend checking out the links @Acland provided above. With that said, we’d need a consultation to weigh in on what may be ongoing in your situation. However, sounds like you are already seeing significant improvements since onset, which is excellent. Admittedly, it’s rare I become concerned about labral tears for most shoulder cases but I understand how your prior experience is likely influencing your current concerns. A consultation would give us free time to discuss this topic in more depth. If you are interested, please complete our intake paperwork HERE. If you’d like to read more on this topic on your own, then please see our shoulder series HERE.
