Shoulder Pain

Hello Docs,

I have been retired from playing competitive baseball for over 3 years now but wanted to gain a better understanding of a weird injury I had in high school.

Some context, I played center field and made a head first diving catch and landed awkwardly on my hands and got up with 10/10 sharp pain in the posterior part of my shoulder when I lifted my arm above shoulder height (shoulder flexion or abduction). The next day I had it evaluated by a family friend who was an athletic trainer at a near by college and all range of movement tests/assessments pointed towards a torn labrum. That same night (being the naïve 17 year old) I iced my shoulder on and off 20 minutes at a time for about 3 hours and took ibuprofen. The next day I went to a shoulder specialist and I had all my range of motion back, passed all the strength tests, pain level was about 3/10 and pain was completely gone within the next 3-4 days.

Thanks!

Hey - thanks for the question. Tough to say without more information but if you’ve recovered since this incident, not sure I’d be too concerned. We did write-up a shoulder series that may provide more insight. Part 1 is here - https://www.barbellmedicine.com/blog/scapulardyskinesis/
