Shoulder Pain

Good morning, 1st time poster, been training for a little over a year, and I absolutely love all the youtube videos yall post. They have helped me a ton!!! So thanks for all you do.

I’m currently experiencing pain in my left shoulder, I’ve watched a lot of the injury management videos yall have done, and the theme seems to be, if you can train without significant pain, that’s better than not training. I tend to agree with that, maybe it’s the old football player in me hearing the coach asking me are you hurt or injured.

My shoulder does not hurt very much when actually benching, pressing, pulling, or squatting (the front squat is the exercise where it has hurt the most immediatelay following the set), but it is not 100% normal either when pressing (I have not noticed a drop in performance, i.e, load on the bar, Reps, RPE, etc.).

however, when not training, throught the day, I get in weird positions, and it can legitimately hurt, i feel the occasional “click,” etc. I’m not a doctor, but it feels like tightness is my problem, so I’ve been stretching, which seems to offer some temporary relief.

That was a lot to ask my actual question, I’ve been training through it, as the pain is manageable for about a week and half, and feel like I should keep training unless the pain tells me I can’t.

Is there a time period where if it hasn’t healed itself, I should rethink the training through it model? Or should I already be thinking that.

Thanks yall!!!

Hey, welcome to the forums and thanks for the question. Yes, we are typically of the opinion finding some activity you find tolerable with which to build from is much better than inactivity. With that said, this is a balance and ensuring we aren’t dipping into the other end of the spectrum of ignoring our experience and just keep hammering away at training.

I don’t typically recommend stretching to folks in these scenarios. Clicking isn’t usually a concern either but I’d recommend getting a consult with us if you’d like some individual guidance/recommendations: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1F…ilUWA/viewform

Have you read this article? https://www.barbellmedicine.com/blog…ining-what-do/

Thanks for the response, I filled out the questionnaire. I have read the pain, what do article. That along with Austin’s video on YouTube about pain management has been the biggest reason I’ve continued to train. Hearing that the clicking is usually not a concern makes feel a little more comfortable.

Like you said, while I want to keep training, I don’t want to go to far on the other side and just ignore. My current plan is too run this week out at normal loads, volume, and frequency (assuming it doesn’t feel worse), and see if it gets better on it’s own. If it doesnt, I’m going to start reducing training, starting with intensity, and trying to keep volume and frequency the same.
