Squat form check

Posted on behalf of my wife. This is her first attempt at 5-3-0 squats on the 12wk strength template. This is 70# at 135# bodyweight.

she is what I consider intermediate as she has ran SSLP successfully in the past until she stalled. Tried the usual resets recommended those guys over at SS before I finally convinced her to switch over to BBM.

She’s gotten consistent the last few weeks and these are her stats:

5’3”
135 bw
Current Numbers: (singles)
squat 140#
ohp 80#
bench 105#
deadlift (sumo) 190#

She is is concerned about her squat because she feels that her it is lacking while her bench, ohp, and deadlift are all progressing nicely on the program. She states “I feel like I have no power coming out of the hole.”

I attribute this to her going forward on her toes, using too narrow a stance (without squat shoes), and potentially rounding her thoracic spine. What’s yall’s Input?

Hey ddoherty, I think it is great that your wife actually enjoys strength training first and for most. As for her form I would agree with what you pointed out at the end of your post. I personally think a squat shoe would help as I found that it really helped me “stay in my hips” as Austin and Jordan have said before. Also as you pointed out her heels do come off the ground on the descent probably due to her pushing her knees so far forward over the toes which may be causing her to compensate on the concentric with a little extra hip drive backwards instead of straight up out of the bottom. I think it would be best to tell her to try and set her knees to where they need to be earlier that way they are not going forward during the entire eccentric phase of the squat. Best thing for her to do would just be to continue training and practicing the lift and keep the strength coming!!
Best of luck to you both!
