strength training in combination with training for (running) endurance races

Hello, I have come over from a demographic of running marathons and 50k races. Currently I am strength training with barbell lifts only. I am seeing results in all my major lifts and continue to add 5lbs each workout. These workouts are basically on a push, pull, legs splits due to working 12 hr shifts. I hit all these major lifts at least 2x per week. Mostly, I squat 3x per week. Which means I do some lifting about 5 days per week. I plan to continue to get as strong as possible. I am looking for ideas/experience with keeping strength training going during training for a 50k race which means running begins in July this year. I know I will cut some weight but would like to remain strong and prevent injuries while adding 25-30 mpw into the mix. Strength training has always helped me but I do have to start putting in some miles at that point

Hi there,

When it comes time to prepare for your race, you will need to reduce your strength training frequency (maybe down to 3, or 2 times per week at a minimum) and total barbell training volume while you gradually increase your running volume to your goal. While cutting weight, use the macro guidelines listed in the To Be a Beast article for fat loss (i.e., increase your protein intake a bit higher).
