Strengthen your pelvic floor muscles

Many women do kegel exercises to strengthen their pelvic floor muscles.

Does it make sense for men to also do kegel exercises to strengthen their pelvic floor muscles?

If so, how best to do that?

Kegel exercises are often a part of treatments directed towards reducing stress urinary incontinence (SUI) and other pelvic floor conditions. They don’t reliably do much for SUI and, are often performed in a manner that does not increase strength or coordination of the pelvic floor, and in some cases, may actually be counterproductive.

I do not routinely recommend them to women or men.

This raises the question of what should women do for this if not Kegel? Is anything proven to help?

I think there may be a misunderstanding.

Pelvic floor PT and muscle training is more comprehensive than just Kegels, though they are often part of someone’s treatments plan.

I do not routinely recommend them without a good reason to, as people often do them unproductively and for no real benefit (sometimes harm).

There are other interventions to use for SUI, which vary based on the cause. This is kind of a messy area with regards to research and clinical outcomes, but other options include breathing techniques, gait trainer (e.g. for runners), devices (e.g. pessaries), surgery, and more.
