“Strengthening ankle”

so for some hindsight ,

when I was 14 I broke my right ankle skateboarding.

Last year while leaving a concert I stepped down onto some uneven pavement and yet again broke that same ankle.

Its still very stiff in the mornings , gives me random pain. I’m not quite sure if it ever healed properly. Long story short last night I rolled it pretty good. And it got me thinking that perhaps my footwear of choice is not the most ideal. Last night I was wearing air max 270s, which have a pretty big air unit which I would assume makes for a pretty unstable ankle. I never have issues while wearing my romaleos so not ankle issues while squatting really.

Would wearing minimalist shoes in any way aid in strengthening that foot and ankle back up? Or should I just stick with a regular shoe that doesn’t have as much of a heel

This probably doesn’t matter at all/matters very little in the context of training. I’m not sure you have a weaker than normal ankle after the 1st year of injury. If you engage in a lot of high-risk activities like basketball, soccer, skateboarding, etc. you might benefit from wearing an ankle brace while you do that.

I would consider consulting a good PT (perhaps Derek or Mike) to make sure you’re doing the right stuff in the post injury period.
