tall guy deadlifts

Should a tall guy set up further back on the deadlift meaning not mid-foot? I have heard Chad Wesley Smith say this. It does not sound correct. Also, can my knees translate a little further forward during the deadlift meaning not in line with elbows? I feel the deadlift is hard on my back.

We’d prefer an individual set up such that the bar starts out over the middle of the foot, and generally stays in contact with the legs all the way up.
