I’ve been struggling with a pain in my left elbow anterior in the region of the brachialis muscle. It only causes pain during bench press and begins during warmup sets. By the time I’m up to my 3X5 sets, it’s quite painful and gives me a sensation that my grip could fail, which I know is just in my head. I did a few weeks with lighter weights, more reps and those were feeling good. My second workout back at 3X5 and it was bad! I use elbow sleeves, but they don’t do much.
I do overhead press, pendlay rows and heavy deadlifts without issue, only the bench press is bothered. Good chance that it’s from my squat grip? I’ve tried a few variations but nothing seems to help, I don’t do thumbs around grip because that winds up really hurting my wrists.
Im about ready to give up on the bench press and try dumbell presses and dips, see if that will help.
It it just doesn’t make sense to me it being my squat grip, since it’s only one arm affected.
This happened in October as during my SSLP, I was only doing squat and deadlifts from 225-255 at that time. My SS Coach had me doing lower weight on the bench press for sets of 5X3, then eventually up to sets of 3X6 at a reduced weight. Everything seemed to be working fine as I continued to add weight to the bar on deadlift and squats. I’ll try to work on my squat grip bring my hands in closer, focus on keeping the elbows down, etc. I am nearly at the end of novice training for the squat as I’m now doing a light day on Wednesdays, and am already alternating my pressing with heavy, light medium days. I will be using RPE now but only to try and guess my number on the assigned workloads.
