To Belt or Not To Belt

BBM Team! PLEASE HALP!

I understand using competition “accessories?” during completion lifts (say sleeves, belt, wrist wrap etc.)…however, in the Bridge literature I read that accessory lifts should be done without the use of said accessories (particularly the belt).

Wouldn’t the benefit of using a belt or other accessory, (which allows for more loading on the bar in some if not all cases), benefit strength gainzZZz?

I’ve bounced back and forth on belting up for paused squat, 3-0-3s, rows etc. but would love to get an answer I can just run with so I stop being so wishy washy.

Thanks yall.

Going beltless, as you noted, will often mean you use less weight. This allows you to have a reasonable stress, enough volume at a fitting intensity, and allow for recovery, all important things in the pursuit of gainzZz. The most weight on the bar for every lift isn’t always the most important thing.

FWIW I use the belt only on the competition lifts as noted in The Bridge. I use straps on rows and the working sets of rack deadlifts. I use wrist wraps on the working sets of CGBP. So no belt on accessories and then the supporting equipment for grip/wrist on work sets only.

Thanks for the reply Leah, as always! The Bridge is proving to be as much of a mental/egotistical exercise as it is a physical challenge for me but I think I’m putting the pieces together.

Sounds like you’re on the right track!
