Training after C-spine surgery

Hey, Docs. I’m presently recovering from two-level disc arthroplasty as result of a cervical nerve compression issue I’ve been dealing with for some time. Surgery went great! I’m feeling a lot better. In a few weeks, I have some follow-up imaging scheduled. My Doc is also going to evaluate me at that time and possibly give me the okay to resume training again which I suspect he will.

Just wanted to give you a little context but let me try to get into the meat of this question. I’ve contended with this nerve compression problem for a year or so before having my procedure. I’m sure you can infer it led to some significant strength imbalances with respect to my right pec/arm and left pec/arm. I’m planning to start the Beginner Template from phase I once I get back in the gym. The preselected exercises are all barbell lifts which is what I would really like to do. But since I’m coming off the heels of such a protracted strength imbalance and layoff, do you think it would more advisable to swap out the OHP and Bench for DB variations? My doc told me to focus on DBs but I’d really like to get the BBM perspective.

I think you’d be OK either way. Glad to hear you’ll be getting back at it soon.

Thanks, Austin!
