I have a good friend who I am coaching but some weeks he won’t even train because he says he has chrons and it hurts too bad to train. He also says he can’t eat all the time which makes him tired some days and doesnt feel like training. His condition is being treated by a doctor but he loves training with me and was asking if I knew how to make it easier on him to train more. You guys are the most knowledgeable people I know so I figured I’d ask you since I know nothing about chrons actually found out what chrons was from him. All that said I’ve had him running an lp for about 5 months and he still makes progress but he’ll skip 1 or 2 weeks on some occasions due to pain in his stomach. Is there anything I should be cautious with or anything i can do different to get him in the gym more and have him move on to the bridge? I’ve been treating him like a normal client until now when he started complaining more and missing more time. Thanks.
How is his Crohn’s being treated?
This is a situation where an autoregulated program is essential, rather than an overly rigid program with forced load increases, given the potential for substantial day-to-day symptom fluctuations.
He gets medical infusions every other month and some kind of steroid in between if needed. Could you clarify what an autoregulated program is I’ve never heard of that term. Thank you for the reply and advice.
Autoregulation refers to a method by which the “dose” of training stress is regulated on a session-to-session basis depending on how you’re performing that day. You may have heard about us discussing RPE, for example, which is a tool that can be used to autoregulate intensity. If you have more questions about this, I’d look up our content regarding programming and discuss further in the unmoderated training forum.
I understand perfectly now thank you for the clarity and response.
Hi there
I have Crohn’s also and using RPE is vital to adjust loads (like today for instance where last night I slept poorly due to a flare). I am about to go on biologics this week.
I personally would also look into a low-starch diet (the Drs might disagree) to address the possible gut pathogens.
