Warfarin/Waran & Powerlifting- Heavy lifts/training and Long distance running

Hi

As I am now on Warfarin I wonder based current research/scientific litterature whether I can powerlift or do heavy exercise/lifting with autoregulation while on Warfarin/Waran? Because when I read on the internet there are websites claiming that the increased pressure from heavy lifting and valsalva maneuver can increase the risks of internal gastrointestinal and intracranial bleeding. And also the bleeding risk being relevant due to burst or ruptured blood vessels from heavy lifting.

I am currently having a specialist managing and adjusting my PK/INR where it has to be in 2,0-3,0. And does it matter if one has a small tear or twitch from heavy training because I read that it increases internal bleeding at the injured area.

Another question I have is whether I can do longdistance running or compete in marathon while on Waran/Warfarin?

Thanks and kind regards and best wishes,

The main consideration while on warfarin would be avoiding trauma/impact injury.

I cannot give you specific quantitative risks, nor can I give you individualized medical advice.

If I were in this situation, I would be continuing to do regular strength & conditioning, including heavy resistance training and running.

You will always be at a higher risk of bleeding for the rest of your life on warfarin. The good news is that bleeding is generally less dangerous & easier to treat compared with blood clots.

I understand! I really appreciate you for taking your time to respond. But just a quick follow-up question, have you and Jordan had experience with patients and/or clients who do or have done Powerlifting and/or longdistance running/marathon-ish training while on Warfarin/Waran? Or do y’all know anyother medical professional and coach who have had clients/patients strength training and/or running while on Warfarin/Waran? Thank You very much!

Best Wishes, Imran

Yes, we have worked with folks on anticoagulants like Warfarin before.
