I seem to have recently developed de Quervain’s tenosynovitis from handling my 4 month old daughter. I’ve only been experiencing pain for a couple of weeks, so for now I’m just doing self care. I ordered a spica brace, and will be icing/exercising every night. My biggest concern at this point is my training. I haven’t really had pain while deadlifting, and I squat with the thumb over the bar, so no issues there either. Being these exercises don’t cause pain, is it safe to say I can continue doing them without further aggravating the tendon? Do you have any suggestions for how to work around benching? I plan to do a powerlifting meet toward the end of this year, so the sooner I can get back to training, the better.
Hey @bschenck88 sorry to hear about the recent issue. Typically my approach to this is load management during training and with appropriately dosed isolation movements to the area via finger resistance exercises (https://www.amazon.com/Rehabilitatio…gateway&sr=8-6 and https://www.amazon.com/Stretcher-Res…gateway&sr=8-4) Regarding training, I wouldn’t modify non-provocative movements. For bench press - I’d let RPE guide the path if possible and find tolerable loading for the movement. I don’t typically recommend splints in these situations.
