Wrist injury from Clean and Jerk

Dear Dr. Miles and Dr. Ray,

Two days ago I hurt my wrist doing the clean. I didn’t dip into the receiving position properly and let 80kg land on my wrist. I heard a pop and set the bar down immediately. I was horrified, but made sure I could still move the joint. There was no swelling that day, nor the day after that. However, in contrast to day 1 of the injury, there was a sharp pain whenever I bent my wrist or tried to do any snatch/clean pull variation. It became quite unpleasant when I tried to make a tight fist in general. There is also what seems to be a ganglion cyst the size of a large pimple on the underside of my wrist.

Should I visit the doctor? There is no swelling and no pain when I keep my wrist straight. I’m thinking of just doing machine leg exercises for now until I can grip the bar.

Sincerely,

Eddie

Hey Eddie. Sorry this happened. We would need more information in order to provide guidance to your specific situation. Did your wrist crash into your knees in the receiving position? Are you currently having symptoms at rest, with all training, or with dynamic lifts? Was the “cyst” there before? Is it painful?
It’s tough to make a recommendation knowing additional information. Might be worthwhile to see a local provider or we would be happy to consult with you remotely.
I recognize it’s been a couple days since your original post, so I hope things are getting better.
