TFCC Lesion

Hey BBM Team,

Could I please get some advice on how to deal with a (possible) TFCC lesion?

A few years ago, I had this in my right wrist. I’m not sure about the exact cause, but assume it might have come from benching with a very close grip or from heavy cable curls.
I had moderate pain in my wrist when under load or when extended or rotated in certain ways. The MRI did not deliver any clear results, but I was told the cause of my pain would likely be some very small ruptured or lesions in or around the TFC. The doctor said that surgery would likely not be helpful either.
So I tried to avoid any movements that would trigger pain in my wrist. Nonetheless, it took about half a year until my wrist felt normal again.

I fear the same might have happened again, this time on my left wrist, after doing heavy overload squats. I was wearing wrist wraps and didn’t notice anything while training, but afterwards I noticed that now I have pain in my left TFC area (triggered the same way as before, i.e. particularly when under load or in certain rotated or extended positions).

Unfortunately, the wrist is one of the joints which is under load in almost any barbell movement. Nonetheless I would like to keep on training, without making big modifications.

What are your thoughts on TFCC injuries? Is resting necessary, and how will training affect the healing process? Is there anything I can do to facilitate or accelarete the recovery?

Many thanks in advance,

Toby

Hey Toby,
Can you go into a little more detail on what your symptoms entail, what you have done since the recent setback, and what is your current programming? What do you consider a “big modification?” If it was one instance often some slight modifications to either technique or training paradigms can get you over the hump. Plus, when it comes to wrist injuries, often pulling can be managed and an SSB comes in handy if things are really flared up.
