Yet another knee question

So this is going to be another knee question but hopefully its something at least slightly different. If its been touched on feel free to send a link but I did a search and didn’t see anything similar ( We are all snowflakes.)

So the problem. I started the endurance template while starting my half marathon training. I had been consistently running prior completing a 10k race ( and several 10ks in training ). I had run the bridge and hypertrophy prior to that but lifting started taking a back seat to running and I hadn’t really been consistent with lifting as I had been in the past. So after week 1 of doing both training ( endurance template as programmed and 4 days of running). Then onto week two starting my second run my right knee didn’t feel quite right, I couldn’t really tell what was up at the time and completed the run, 30 minute easy run. About 0.5 miles into the run the feeling in my knee was basically gone. Then go into lift day 3 for HBBS and it takes me a bit to get warmed up, my knee is in definite discomfort today but after a longer than normal workout I make it through fine.

Here’s where the problem comes in. I get home and my knee is slightly swollen. Mostly on either side of the lower patellar tendon, its just general “squishy” almost seems like fluid but I have no idea if thats true. That has persisted since then, going on 5 days now. It is constantly present, I’m not sure I’d call it painful but it does make some lifts hard, I tried to bench and OHP yesterday instead of Squat OHP to hopefully get it a bit of time to feel better but was surprised how much I felt it in my knee during bench / ohp. I haven’t stopped any exercises, I had a run on both saturday and sunday and completed them both just a little slower than I would’ve liked, lifted on monday again a little lighter weight than I would’ve liked but not a crazy drop.

One other thing not mentioned above that had been going on a while with that knee is I would have pain in the tendon connecting the top of my patellar at the connection point but ONLY when I would lift my leg in a certain way. (If I lifted my leg to wash it in the shower for example lol). Walking around I would never notice but is something that was around.

So now that you have more info than you want, the question, what if anything would you recommend I do? I’m doing some activity every day of the week and would prefer to continue with that but also don’t want to make my knee worse or prolong the “injury”. My initial thought was give it until next week just being mindful of load on it but still continuing everyday and if its still problematic go see my pcp, but thought I’d check in here to see if you had different advice?

Thanks for the post and questions. I would carry on as you are. Modifying the loads and/or running distance to what is tolerable is definitely more beneficial than cutting anything out completely. The presence of some swelling (which is difficult to measure in general) is not always indicative of an injury or problem, especially if you can still perform activity close to what was planned. It’s not uncommon for symptoms to fluctuate during training blocks, but if you’re comfortable fluctuating the intensity and volume in respect to how you’re feeling, you’ll be able to train more consistently. You’re already doing a great job of that, which is why I would recommended to continue with what you’re doing. Obviously if things change and/or if you have more questions, we are available!
