Youth Training on a Limited Budget

I go to a very well equipped gym 3 to 4 days a week on my lunch break.

My two oldest sons, 9 and 11, really want to start lifting. One of them does middle school wrestling and can really benefit from some added strength, the other will be doing wrestling in two years and is incredibly strong for size.

I don’t have the time to take them to my gym, but I can and have gotten them to do some weight training on the weekends and they enjoy it.

I don’t have room in my house for a squat rack. I currently have a concept 2 rower and Kettlebells going for 4 to 16 kg.

I’m currently thinking of what is the best use of maybe $200 a year in equipment for my kids. I’m stuck between:

  • Additional Kettlebells
  • Rouge Strongman Sandbags

In my mind the kettlebells are more versatile, but the sandbags might carry over much better to wrestling.

Any opinions on this?

I don’t really have an opinion on this, but we’ll see if someone else does!

You could consider a wall mounted folding rack, such as the PR-4100 folding squat rack.

If that is either too expensive or too much work, perhaps something like the York Pro Series 204? It can be assembled, moved around, or disassembled and stored.

My house was built by the previous owners. They were both like 5’6”. None of the ceilings are more than about 6’5”. It’s a height issue really.
