12 Week Press Template % guidelines for an RPE Newb

Just starting out on the 12 week press template after running the Bridge and PH3 before that. I’m fairly new to RPE and I’m a bit confused in week 1 of the program. When it says -20% from a single for 5X5 and -17% from a single at 5x4 does this mean we should be doing 80% and 83% of our 1RM or a 6 on the RPE chart? That seems a bit low to me so I don’t think I have it right. When I look at the percentage guidelines and try and cross that with the RPE chart it doesn’t seem to go down that low. For example the 70% for volume work. Is that 70% of the 1RM or of the 5RM? Or am I overthinking this and simply need to take 20% and 17% roughly off the bar?

You are overthinking it. Hit your single at the prescribed difficulty, and take the written percentage off the bar for your remaining sets.

Great Thanks! So I’d be looking at something like CS-1@315, 5@250x5 sets for example. This should regulate itself as my 1 rep at 8 increases. Looking forward to jumping into this and finally having a respectable press.
