I’m on Week 9 of the new templates (switched from earlier version). In Week 9 the OHP from Day 1 is removed, replaced w/ TnG Bench for the remainder of the program. Why is this slot still called “Competition Press” but the press is removed? There’s already a “Competition Bench” on Day 2 so I’m a little confused.
It’s just for volume/rpe prescription. The press doesn’t deserve as many training resources at this point in the programming.
Thanks. So the “Competition X” naming doesn’t indicate that that lift will be one of the tested competition feats of strength at the end? Based on the names I thought the Squat, Deadlift, Bench, and Press would be tested at the end (that’s why it surprised me to see OHP go away).
^^^This is for purposes of a powerlifting focus ie Bench as the 2nd lift over Strength lifting which uses the Press, correct? What would you suggest if we want to maintain equal focus on the Press and Bench?
You can’t focus on press and bench at the same time unless you’re very untrained.
Correct and this is a powerlifting template.
Why not train both equally with a 4 day split? I’m not untrained ( 300 B / 200P/) and have set several PR’s recently using a 4 day Upper/lower split.
Doc will there be a press 2.0 coming soon ?
Because that won’t work as well for getting your bench or press to move. If you’re setting PRs with your current programming that’s great, but we don’t see great progress on both lifts at the same time unless someone is either detrained (and reclaiming previous strength) or a novice. Just adding weight to the bar doesn’t mean you’re necessarily stronger either.
I would agree that focusing on either the press or bench for a block of programming is best for that particular lift, but wouldn’t rule out the possibility of making progress on both even with an experienced trainee. I’ve been running mostly 3 day programming for the past 3 years. Switching to a 4 day I can get more upper body volume without being taxed by squatting or pulling prior. Its a new training stimulus. Perhaps those reasons are why I’m making progress on both?
