I just need a suggestion on which template to run next:
training history:
20ish years of bro crap
Weindler programs 2 years (some success on deadlift/squat, set all time 1RM on bench)
SSNLP ~ 3 months (set squat, press and deadlift PR’s)
Andy baker GGW (HLM) 4 cycles: (set squat, deadlift PR, press and bench stalled or dropped slightly)
BBM 4 day hyp: 1 cycle (enjoyed the training, hit / matched rep PRs on squat & press)
GGW again 1 cycle: (squat and deadlift progress/PR)
My goal is to keep my squat and deadlift progressing, and move my bench and press 1RM’s. Had good progress with Andy’s GGW, but my bench needs more volume as its my most advanced lift.
Would you suggest strength 1 or powerlifting/strength lifting 2 ?
Thanks for the post and the background! I’d recommend powerlifting II if you can swing 4 days per week! It’s not great for the press, but then again I’m not sure any program is suitable for both the bench and the press after the beginner template.
Is there really any reason to be enamored with the press? Could it be relegated to a GPP exercise and light day pressing movement or would you recommend cycling bench/press focus?
I think we could ask that about many things-Is there really any reason to be enamored with… And yet some people love these things. Haha.
Although to Jordan’s point, training time and focus is always limited, and we all make choices. Prioritizing either the bench or the press seems to be the course of training as we all progress past the beginner phases. If you were to cycle training foci, you’d still be compromising the hope that BOTH of them progress well, at a similar rate.
Thanks for the suggestions.
Just purchased powerlifting 2 and time crunch templates, (I was just asked to help on my 8yo’s youth football team, so Aug ~ Oct will be tight for gym time.
I’ll push my bench for a few cycles (Bro’s gotta bench) and then move to a strengthlifting template and work on a 300 press.
Thanks for the content, templates look great and love the podcasts.
