400 mg of Caffeine in a single dose or spread out?

Hello!

I like to drink coffee, simply to give me energy throughout the day, as I feel I’m more productive and energetic when I do. I never drink it to enhance training (personal preference). I read that up to 400 mg of caffeine per day seems to be safe for healthy adults. So, I would find it way more practical in my situation to just drink a large coffee in the morning containing 300-400 mg of caffeine, than drinking multiple cups throughout the day. I also read that the half-life of caffeine is 5-6 hours. Would that mean that if I took 400 mg all at once, in 5-6 hours I would still feel the effects of a 200 mg dose? This concept is a little confusing for me.

So, the question is, is drinking 300-400 mg in a single dose in the morning (in the form of a large serving of coffee) a reasonable approach to provide “energy” throughout the day in order to be more productive at work? Or would you recommend splitting it up into multiple doses?

Thank you in advance for any response! Greatly appreciate your work.

Caffeine tolerance, half life, and effect vary wildly by individual. I think slowly titrating up your dose of caffeine until you feel the best effect from it would be the play here, not picking an arbitrary number.

The 400mg caffeine safety rec is based on consensus despite data that individuals consuming 4+ cups of coffee per day may have some health benefit.

Yeah, I’d say finding the minimum effective dose through trial and error is the way to go here. Sure, I could ingest 400mg of caffeine in one sitting, but then I’d be a raging manic ass for three hours.
