I usually drink coffee in the AM containing about 200-300mg of caffeine, and then get about 200mg of caffeine before my afternoon training sessions. However, my schedule is changing and I will have to start training in the morning.
Is it reasonable to assume that the AM coffee my body is used to drinking will be sufficient enough to enhance gym performance? Or, since my body is technically used to the coffee, should I expect to need more caffeine?
A very first world problem lol. Thanks for your time
I’d wager that your performance with your normal AM coffee would be greater than training in the AM sans coffee. This suggests your normal coffee would provide an ergogenic benefit.
On the other hand, that dose of caffeine is pretty low unless you’re very light or very sensitive to caffeine. 3mg/kg is the low end of the ergogenic dosing range with caffeine with a top end of 6-9mg/kg.
Now, I’m not sure if increasing your caffeine intake will improve performance right away or, alternatively, you’ll have increased side effects…but I’d probably just drink your standard AM cup of joe for a few weeks and then up the dose a little bit and see how you fare.
